Psychotherapy is a process designed to improve psychological functioning and emotional wellness through evidence based practice grounded in psychological theory and clinical research. By engaging in the therapeutic process, individuals can achieve positive outcomes, including:
Symptom Reduction: alleviation of distress and reduce symptoms of emotional dysregulation, anxiety, depression etc..
Neurobiological: Improved capacity for nervous system regulation, helping to mitigate the physiological impacts of distress.
Improved Coping: Enhanced ability to handle stress and life changes.
Enhanced Relationships: Better communication and boundary-setting.
Personal Insight: Increased self-awareness and clearer personal goals.
Better Functioning: Improved overall well-being, including, in some cases, enhanced work performance and physical health.
Increased Self-Agency: Strengthening the internal locus of control and psychological flexibility, empowering clients to navigate life transitions with greater autonomy.
While psychotherapy is a highly effective treatment for mental health concerns, it is a clinically active process that involves certain psychological risks. It is important to be aware of the following factors as part of your informed consent.
Potential Risks:
Emotional Reactivity: The therapeutic process often requires the exploration of distressing memories, maladaptive patterns, and complex emotions. This can lead to a temporary increase in subjective distress, including heightened anxiety, sadness, or emotional fatigue, particularly in the initial stages.
Interpersonal Dynamics: As treatment progresses and you develop new boundaries and communication styles, your existing social and familial dynamics may undergo changes. These shifts can occasionally result in relational friction as you and your support system adjust.
Treatment Outcomes: Although therapeutic interventions are grounded in psychological theory and clinical research, individual responses to treatment vary. Success is a collaborative outcome and cannot be guaranteed, as it is influenced by the therapeutic alliance, the complexity of the presenting issues, and consistent engagement with the process.
